About This Opportunity

Nicolaus Copernicus Astronomical Center, Polish Academy of Sciences offers Postdoctoral Researcher in Multimessenger Astrophysics and Stellar Evolution in Warsaw, focused on stellar evolution and compact-object multimessenger astrophysics.

The Nicolaus Copernicus Astronomical Center is inviting applications for a postdoctoral role investigating stellar evolution and electromagnetic or gravitational-wave signals in the neighbourhood of massive black holes. The advertised project is led by Dr Aleksandra Olejak. The research connects stellar evolution models with compact-object dynamics and observational transient signatures. Potential analyses include extreme or intermediate mass-ratio inspirals, tidal interactions, X-ray transients and hydrodynamical modelling, with scientific interpretation relevant to future gravitational-wave observatories such as LISA.A PhD in astrophysics, astronomy, physics or another discipline relevant to numerical stellar evolution and transient astronomy is required, together with evidence of independent research. Compensation or funding: Approximately PLN 13,000 gross per month. Stated appointment or programme length: Up to 30 months. Application timing: 15 November 2026 at 23:59 Europe/Warsaw. Who This Opportunity Is Best Suited For: Applicants with computational astrophysics experience, knowledge of stellar dynamics around black holes and modelling tools such as MESA are particularly well positioned to engage with the research objectives.Potential Challenges / Who May Find It Less Suitable: The narrow combination of stellar evolution and relativistic or high-energy transient astrophysics may be challenging for applicants without numerical modelling experience. The post is based in Warsaw and is fixed-term.Overall Opportunity Assessment: The distinctive aspect is linking stellar structure and evolution to multimessenger observables produced around massive black holes.
