We’re looking for an experienced
Backend Engineer
to join a team focused on developing and enhancing an Enterprise Knowledge Platform. You’ll work on backend services and APIs that enable the management, validation, versioning and publication of ontology assets, helping transform semantic knowledge into reusable capabilities for graph-based, vector and hybrid knowledge solutions.

About the role You’ll be responsible for designing, developing and maintaining backend services that support the full ontology lifecycle — from creating and managing concepts, relationships and metadata to validation, approval and publication.
Working closely with ontology specialists, architects and engineering teams, you’ll help build reusable APIs and integrate semantic capabilities with knowledge management platforms, processing pipelines and graph-building services.
Design, develop and maintain backend services and APIs for managing ontology concepts, relationships, mappings and metadata
Implement ontology lifecycle capabilities, including drafting, reviewing, approving, publishing, versioning and retiring ontology assets
Develop mechanisms for semantic validation and quality checks, ensuring consistency, completeness and compliance with ontology standards
Integrate ontology services with Knowledge Manager, Knowledge Builder, knowledge-processing pipelines and graph-building services
Support the publication and availability of approved ontology assets for graph, vector and hybrid knowledge solutions
Design and implement data models, service interfaces and integration patterns
Collaborate with the Semantic Ontology Lead, Ontology Engineers, architects and engineering teams to translate business and technical requirements into reusable platform capabilities
Write automated tests and ensure the reliability, security and maintainability of backend services
Contribute to observability, technical documentation, deployment processes and continuous improvement
Proven commercial experience as a Backend Engineer or Software Engineer, delivering production-grade services and APIs
Strong programming skills in Java, Python or an equivalent backend language
Experience designing and developing APIs, service interfaces, data models and system integrations
Good understanding of software engineering principles, clean code, testing and secure development practices
Practical knowledge of ontologies, taxonomies, metadata, semantic models or knowledge graphs
Familiarity with semantic technologies such as RDF, OWL, SHACL or SPARQL, or equivalent graph and ontology technologies
Experience working with relational, graph or NoSQL databases
Understanding of cloud environments, CI/CD pipelines and observability tools
Nice to have:
Experience implementing workflow, versioning, validation or publishing capabilities
Hands-on experience with knowledge graph technologies and graph databases
Experience building enterprise-scale data or knowledge management platforms
Familiarity with semantic data modelling and ontology governance
Experience with automated deployment, monitoring and production support
Previous experience working in cross-functional Agile engineering teams
